The costume letters are being given out today, I have asked for their costumes to be brought into school for the 7th December so that the children can have a few practises in their costumes.

Wear blue on Friday

Tomorrow the school is having a
´Wear it blue´ day
in aid of Movember.

Movember is an annual event which takes place every November and sees men across the world grow moustaches to raise money for charity.

The Movember Foundation tackles mens’ health issues including prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health.

We are inviting the children to come dressed in blue and with a 1 euro donation that will go to this charity.

Literacy homework

This weeks Literacy homework is to create a postcard from their Literacy lesson on Friday.

The children will be listening to a story about a boy who is always late for school.

During this lesson, we will be learning about the layout of a post card, for example the address and stamp go on the right side and their message on the left hand side.
We will also be discussing their punctuation.

They will complete their first draft on Friday during their Literacy lesson, and their homework is to try to remember their message to the teacher (from the story) and the layout of the postcard.

This will form part of their Big Write the following Friday.

Read Write Inc.

From next week I will be sending home a list of what we call Speedy Green Words, Story Green Words and Red Words.

These words are for your child to practice reading and spelling.

The Speedy Green Words are words that the children need to be able to read quickly, the Story Green Words are words that they need to be able to read and understand prior to reading the story.
The Red Words are also words that they need to be able to read straight away.

We call Green words, words that we can use Fred fingers and/or Fred in our head to segment and blend to be able to read and write them, red words are non phonetic and have to learn by sight.

All the children should be able to read all the green words, as from their assessment they know these sounds. Please encourage your child to use these sounds to read the words.

We will also be practising these words every day at the beginning of their Read Write Inc. lesson.

Remembrance day

On Friday 11th November Year 2 took part in a Remembrance Assembly.
Leading up to this assembly the children had completed a few different activities to remember the past and the things we are grateful for.

We all painted our hand to make a class poppy.

We also used clay to make a clay poppy.

Add adn subtract 2-digit numbers

I have received a few questions on how to add 2-digit numbers together, so I thought I would blog to let all parents know how we do this at school.

The children can use a 100 number square.

The children have been told a story about a very hungry alligator who only eats the biggest numbers.
So the gators mouth is open and the biggest number.

I have found a short song on youtube to remind them of which way the sign goes, please see link below.

I hope you all had a great half term break!

Welcome back into our second half term.

The countdown has already started for our Christmas show,
The date to put into your diary is Monday 19th December.
Could you let me know if your child will not be present at school on this day, as I will be allocating parts this weekend.
Marga will be emailing all parents, but if you could either email me directly or write a message in their message book if they will NOT be at school on that Monday ASAP I would be extremely grateful.

Further details on the show will follow shortly.
